Facebook Introduces Usernames

Facebook usernames is what has been missing from the leading social network’s platform. While some social platforms like LinkedIn have relied well on the usernames in URLs, Facebook has followed the traditional approach of assigning a user number to its members and getting profile information by ID. Not anymore! Facebook is planning to launch a username system which will allow the users to track and reach their friends exactly by typing the username as part of the URL, http://www.facebook.com/username.

Usernames for Facebook Pages

It’s not just with user profiles; the marketing giants will be looking forward to embrace the new URL structure to revise their Facebook marketing campaigns. The new URL structure is planned to be implemented on the Facebook Pages and each page can have a unique name which the administrator will be able to choose on first come first serve basis. So those who want to protect their trademarks from potential misuse have been advised by Facebook to contact theme here.

Usernames for New Members

For those who have joined Facebook on or after May 31, 2009, such users wouldn’t be able to choose the username which I believe is pretty good measure to prevent the abuse. Usernames would be available on http://www.facebook.com/username on Saturday, June 13 from 12:01am EDT. Once selected the username cannot be changed or transferred to anyone else, so take your time and choose a best username for yourself.
